Carey’s was awarded the 2-phase, seven-figure Tender to, firstly, construct a new build extension and, secondly, refurbish existing wards at the National Maternity Hospital in Dublin.
The works involved:
- A 3-storey steel framed extension integrated to the existing, operational labour delivery unit at the second floor level.
- Constructing a new stair core.
- Provision of a glazed emergency access stair from ground to second floor to service the new extension.
This project was undertaken during the Covid pandemic which presented some unique challenges. Infection control was of the utmost importance and the fit-out was adapted to suit the Hospital Covid-19 requirements. A detailed temporary Works Design was implemented throughout the Project to ensure that the Works were undertaken in a safe manner. Furthermore, the construction was located in a densely populated urban location and due to the existing building remaining occupied and operational throughout the contract period, required close coordination with the Hospital Management Team. In spite of all this, the works were successfully completed to specifications and within the project budget.
Completion Date: October 2020
