The Grove project consisted of part-demolition, refurbishment and remodelling of the old Grove Hospital along with new extensions and site works. The site in Tuam, originally an 18th century House, was used as a private hospital under the Bons Secours Order of nuns from 1944 until its closure in 2001 and prior to this was used as a Diocesan school house as well as a private dwelling. This was a project with an investment close to the threshold of eight figures.
The Project involved:
- Retaining the existing slate roof of the oldest part of the structure with alterations to eaves and new guttering.
- New external insulation to building façade.
- Protection and restoration of decorative ceiling to the Chapel including the restoration of stained glass windows.
- Refurbishment of, and alterations to, existing basement area, staircases and Lifts.
- New alu-clad windows and a new zinc roof installed on newer parts of the building.
- Internal fit-out of high-quality joinery items, recessed stair handrails and feature walls.
- External full landscaping works and furniture: new car park, footpaths, signs and lighting.
The project presented some challenges to overcome due to the historic nature of the existing buildings, access from a busy road and proximity to local schools, a primary care centre and neighbouring properties. It was successfully completed according to program and budget.
